GIS (Geographic Information Systems) is a powerful tool for interpreting and representing the data we collect. The ability to look at data represented on a map or chart can bring concepts and patterns into focus that might otherwise be lost when looking at raw data.
For example, WIN uses GIS software in the delivery of our BEETcast model to interpolate raw weather data and determine DSV values for sites as specific as a single field. By representing the weather stations and our subscribers' beet field locations on a working GIS application, WIN is able to apply a relationship between the two.
BEETcast subscribers are asked to forward a brief description of the beet field location(s) that they wish to receive DSV numbers for. This information is then placed into the GIS application which interpolates the DSV value for your specific location.
With the known co-ordinates of our BEETcast subscriber field locations, we can assign a DSV value that is unique to that particular geographic space. It could result in a slight DSV variance for fields that are considered to be quite close to one another, perhaps saving a spray application over the course of a season.
