Timing is Critical for Effective FOLICUR Application!
The Ideal Time
The ideal time to spray FOLICUR is when 25% of the total head number (main heads plus tillers) is in flower. As a guideline, depending on weather conditions, this time may occur about 2 to 4 days after 75% of all the heads have emerged from the boot AND cleared the flag leaf (Zadoks 59). It is critical for producers to frequently walk across their field for an accurate assessment of the average wheat stage.
The Earliest Time to Spray
It is obvious that all wheat fields cannot be sprayed at this ideal time. How early or how late can wheat be sprayed and still be effective? Well, there is solid research to suggest that spraying before the ideal time is much better than spraying after the ideal time. So how soon before 25% flower? FOLICUR is only effective on heads (or parts of the head) which are directly contacted by the spray. Any wheat head or a portion of wheat head that is still in the boot will receive no chance for any control by FOLICUR. So the earliest possible time to practically spray is when most heads (including tillers) have completely emerged and cleared the flag leaf.
The Latest Time to Spray
Ok, so how late is too late to spray then? The latest time to consider is 2 to 3 days after 25% flower. Poor control is expected with spraying later than 4 days after 25% flowering, or depending on the weather conditions, about 8 days after head emergence (day 0). After this time, there is no alternative opportunity for control.
In Summary, Producers Need to be Aware of:
- the average stage of wheat across a specific field (fields walked daily to update) on selected locations across the province
- the actual or predicted date when 75% of all the heads clear the flag leaf (Day 0 or Zadoks 59)
- the predicted DON level when wheat actually headed or is predicted to head (day 0 - See DON Level Maps for each Day 0)
- the need to book custom sprayers early (if there is a chance that spraying is warranted) ideal spray time = 25% heads in flower earliest time to spray = majority of heads have fully cleared flag leaf latest time to spray = 3 days after 25% flower poor control = 4 days after 25% flower
- the need to frequently connect with weather forecasts and custom operators to hit the spray application window
